I worked on the opening cinematic for this announcement trailer. Composed and rendered entirely from Unreal Engine 5. The focal point of the piece, the tower, was constructed using Houdini from a selection of the games assets - mostly buildings and modular wall pieces. I did all the camera work, the environment design and construction, visual effects, lighting and post. Additional lighting and set dressing by other team members (We had a small team of 3 working on this intermittently)
The first step in the construction of the tower used as the central element to the trailer, was to ingest the .fbx asset containing all the modular components and break them into more useable groups. This process also cleaned up any redundant attributes such as vertex colours whilst preserving UV’s and normal data.
I could then build the tower up in sections using these modular elements, cloning and deforming into strips that could be bent into cylindrical layers and performing boolean operations to cut and merge details into place. I also had to introduce some rudimentary damage to indicate the age of the tower which would be detailed further in Unreal.
This section of the tower outer wall was back-lit in Unreal with shafts of volumetric light and reveals a flock of bats as the camera passes by.
